Description

This multi-tiered Animal Cake features intricate safari patterns both inside and out, combining moist zebra and tiger-striped layers with vibrant fondant decorations. It is a stunning centerpiece that brings the magic of the zoo to life through creative baking techniques and classic Southern flavors.

Ingredients

  • Vanilla cake batter (prepared and divided)
  • Black and orange gel food coloring
  • White rolled fondant
  • Black rolled fondant
  • Vanilla buttercream frosting
  • Chocolate frosting
  • Kit Kat bars
  • Pirouline cookies
  • Clear high-proof alcohol (such as vodka or Everclear)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the safari fondant letters by tinting white fondant with gel colors, layering black stripes for the zebra effect, and brushing with alcohol to remove excess powdered sugar.
  2. Divide the vanilla cake batter into three portions: leave one plain, tint one deep black, and tint the third vibrant orange.
  3. Create the zebra pattern in 8-inch round pans by dropping alternating tablespoons of plain and black batter; create the tiger pattern in a rectangular pan by layering orange, black, and plain batter.
  4. Bake the cake layers in a preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, then allow them to cool completely on wire racks.
  5. Assemble the cake by securing the rectangular tiger layer to a board with buttercream, then stack the 8-inch and 6-inch layers to create different zoo exhibits.
  6. Decorate the cake using white vanilla buttercream for ice, chocolate frosting for the ground, Pirouline cookies for fences, and the prepared fondant letters for the finish.

Notes

To ensure the internal animal patterns remain distinct, make sure your batter has a consistent, pourable texture. If the batter is too thick, it won’t spread into rings; if too thin, the colors will bleed into one another. Always chill your cake layers for at least an hour before stacking to prevent sliding during the decoration process.
