Description

Create a mathematically precise superhero centerpiece by using a template-guided carving method and professional fondant techniques. This guide ensures a structurally sound and visually stunning mask design perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

  • 10-inch round or rectangular dense cake base
  • Buttercream frosting (for crumb coating)
  • 24 oz Red fondant
  • 4 oz Black fondant
  • 2 oz White fondant
  • Small amount of water (for adhesive)

Instructions

  1. Bake the cake base and allow it to cool completely to room temperature to ensure the starch structure is set.
  2. Place a Spider Man face template over the cake and use a sharp serrated knife to carve vertically around the edges.
  3. Apply a thin layer of buttercream crumb coat to the shaped cake and chill for 20 minutes to create a firm foundation.
  4. Knead and roll out the red fondant to 1/8-inch thickness, drape it over the cake, and smooth it before trimming the excess.
  5. Cut eye shapes from black and white fondant using the template, then adhere them and the black fondant webbing to the face using small drops of water.

Notes

To prevent the fondant from sticking to your workspace, lightly dust the surface with cornstarch or powdered sugar rather than flour. If you find the black webbing difficult to handle, use a clay extruder for perfectly uniform strings. Always store the finished cake in a cool, dry place rather than the refrigerator to prevent the fondant from sweating or losing its shape.
