Description

This rustic Ugly Cake features a moist yellow cake base swirled with a rich, creamy vanilla custard for a comforting, homemade treat. Its simple appearance hides a decadent, melt-in-your-mouth texture that is perfect for family gatherings or a cozy afternoon snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 4 large eggs, divided
  • 2 cups whole milk, divided
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 box vanilla pudding mix
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the yellow cake mix, three eggs, one cup of whole milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter until smooth.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly to the corners.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the softened cream cheese, the remaining cup of milk, the pudding mix, and the final egg until well combined.
  5. Carefully pour the custard mixture over the top of the cake batter and use a butter knife to gently swirl the layers together.
  6. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the edges are deep golden brown and the center is mostly set.
  7. Cool the cake on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes, then finish with a generous dusting of powdered sugar before slicing.

Notes

To achieve the best results, ensure your cream cheese is completely softened to room temperature before mixing to avoid large lumps in the custard. For a cleaner slice, use a sharp knife wiped clean between each cut, and consider chilling the cake if you prefer a firmer, more fudge-like custard texture.
