Description

Indulge in this classic four-layer dessert featuring a buttery pecan crust, a tangy cream cheese center, and a rich chocolate pudding finish. It is a nostalgic farmhouse treasure that balances creamy textures with a satisfying crunch, making it the perfect chilled treat for any gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans, divided
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 8 ounces whipped topping, thawed and divided
  • 2 packages (3.4 ounces each) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 3 cups cold milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, softened butter, 1 cup of chopped pecans, and a pinch of salt with an electric mixer until crumbly.
  3. Press the mixture firmly into a 13×9 inch baking dish and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until lightly golden; let cool completely.
  4. Beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth, then gently fold in half of the whipped topping.
  5. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the cooled crust, sealing all the way to the edges.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk the chocolate pudding mix and cold milk for two minutes until thickened, then spread over the cream cheese layer.
  7. Top with the remaining whipped topping and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of pecans.
  8. Refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours to allow the layers to set firmly before slicing.

Notes

To achieve perfectly clean layers when serving, dip your knife in warm water and wipe it clean between every single slice. For a deeper flavor profile, try toasting your pecans in a dry skillet for 3-5 minutes before adding them to the crust or topping. This dessert can be prepared a day in advance, which often allows the flavors to meld together even better.
