Ingredients
- 1 box white cake mix (plus eggs, oil, and water as required by package)
- 2 boxes (3.4 oz each) instant cheesecake pudding mix
- 4 cups whole milk
- 2 cups cold heavy whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- Red and blue gel food coloring
- Patriotic sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat oven according to cake mix package directions and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the white cake mix batter in a large bowl as instructed on the box until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly into three bowls: leave one white, tint the second red with gel coloring, and the third blue.
- Drop dollops of the colored batters into the prepared pan, layering them, then use a toothpick to gently swirl the colors together.
- Bake as directed on the cake mix box, then remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes.
- Poke holes across the warm cake using the handle of a wooden spoon, then let the cake cool completely.
- Whisk the instant cheesecake pudding mix with milk until dissolved and pour it over the cooled cake, filling the holes.
- Refrigerate the cake to let the pudding set.
- In a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream and vanilla to soft peaks, then add powdered sugar and beat to stiff peaks.
- Spread the whipped cream over the pudding layer, top with sprinkles, and chill until ready to serve.
Notes
For the best results, ensure your heavy cream and mixing bowl are very cold before whipping to achieve the best volume. To ensure the colors remain distinct, use gel-based food coloring and avoid over-swirling the batter before baking.
